The Museum of the Moving Image has unveiled a robust schedule for April 2026, headlined by the 15th annual First Look Festival and a centenary tribute to film icon Marilyn Monroe.
The museum will expand its operations from April 2–12 to accommodate New York City public school students on spring recess. Family-oriented programming during this period includes a focus on 1980s arcade classics like “Centipede” and “Pole Position,” alongside daily matinees of Albert Lamorisse’s “The Red Balloon” and “White Mane.”
Marilyn Monroe Centenary
On April 11 and 12, the museum will honor Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday with “Marilyn Monroe in New York.” The program features screenings of “The Seven-Year Itch” and “How to Marry a Millionaire,” complemented by a discussion with Melissa Stevens, granddaughter of legendary photographer Sam Shaw. The event highlights Shaw’s archival photographs and personal correspondence with the actress.
15th First Look Festival
The museum’s premier showcase for international cinema, the First Look Festival, runs from April 23 to May 3. The festival opens with the U.S. premiere of James N. Kienitz Wilkins’s “The Misconceived” and concludes with Isabel Sandoval’s “Moonglow.” This year’s lineup includes 21 features, including the New York premiere of “Carousel” starring Chris Pine and Jenny Slate.
A special world premiere of Ken Jacobs’s “A Date with Shirley” is also scheduled for April 26 as part of a citywide tribute to the avant-garde filmmaker.
Special Screenings and Accessibility
Additional April highlights include:
- Anniversary Screenings: A 20th-anniversary showing of “Fast Food Nation” on April 18 featuring director Richard Linklater and writer Eric Schlosser, and a 40th-anniversary screening of Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth.”
- Tributes: A memorial screening of “In Jackson Heights” on April 5, honoring documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman.
- Accessibility: The museum continues its “Access Mornings” every Saturday, offering sensory-friendly hours for families with children on the autism spectrum.
Ongoing Exhibitions
Visitors can also explore “Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body,” an exhibition tracing the intersection of medical imaging and visual art, as well as the permanent “Jim Henson Exhibition.”
Tickets and a complete schedule for all screenings and workshops are available on the museum’s website.
