Theater for the New City and Frog & Peach Theatre have announced the world premiere of “Three Women,” a new country-western musical by Ted Zurkowski, opening April 16 in the East Village.
The production, directed by Lynnea Benson, is scheduled to run through May 3 at Theater for the New City. The musical aims to blend the storytelling traditions of Nashville with the contemporary energy of New York’s theater scene.
“Three Women” follows Billy, a country music star portrayed by Zurkowski, as he returns to Nashville from a national tour. The plot explores themes of love and betrayal as Billy’s domestic life unravels among three women: his wife Bonnie (Gina Simone Pemberton), the reserved Lady (Kaylyn Buehler), and the free-spirited Ruby (Erica Cafarelli).
Zurkowski, the production’s composer and lyricist, is the frontman for the rock band Honey West and a lifetime member of The Actors Studio. He described the score as being influenced by classic country icons such as Waylon Jennings, Tammy Wynette, and Buck Owens.
The cast also features DazMann Still, Elizabeth Ruf, and Steve Taylor. An onstage band, including drummer Denny McDermott and bassist Paul Page, will provide live musical accompaniment throughout the performances.
Director Lynnea Benson, artistic director of Frog & Peach Theatre, leads a creative team that includes Tony-nominated lighting designer Dennis Parichy.
Performances are scheduled for Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 3:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $20, while seniors and students may purchase tickets for $15. Click here to purchase tickets.
