The seventh volume of the Dumbo Projection Project will debut next month, turning the bridges and walls of Brooklyn into an interactive gallery of light and sound.
Running from May 1 to May 31, the project is a collaboration between the Dumbo Business Improvement District and graduate students from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. The interactive installations aim to connect New Yorkers with public infrastructure by allowing them to chip away at virtual facades or navigate digital journeys through their mobile devices.
Among the featured works is ‘Shadow Theater,’ where audiences use phone lights to reveal the story of a traveling bear, and ‘Have You Eaten Yet?’, a video piece centered on the themes of food and community care. All four installations will play on a continuous loop across the Manhattan Bridge and the BQE.
“When we activate our infrastructure with interactive artworks, we create a canvas for creativity,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn. The exhibition will be a featured stop on the First Thursday Gallery Walk Insider Tour on May 7.
The series continues Dumbo’s decade-long history of pioneering monumental projection art. Detailed schedules and artist information are available through the Dumbo neighborhood’s official website.
