Choreographer Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble will celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary this month with “Shapes of Change,” a two-night engagement featuring the world premiere of a water-themed climate work.
The performances, scheduled for April 24-25 at the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s historic Adler Hall, also mark the 150th anniversary of the Society, where Sperling currently serves as Eco-Artist-in-Residence.
The centerpiece of the season is the world premiere of “Sea Change,” a piece exploring humanity’s relationship with rising sea levels. The work features a live score by Emmy Award-winning environmental composer Matthew Burtner, who will conduct the vocal ensemble The New Consort.
Sperling, a leading exponent of the style created by dance pioneer Loïe Fuller, uses transformative costumes and silk to abstract human movement into organic forces like ocean eddies and storm clouds. Her work has increasingly focused on climate literacy and embodied environmental engagement since a 2014 polar mission where she danced on Arctic sea ice.
The anniversary season is divided into two distinct programs. Friday’s “Program A” includes “Fractal Memories” and “Plastic Harvest,” followed by a reception. Saturday’s “Program B” features “Wind Rose” and excerpts from “Arbor,” concluding with an artist talkback.
“These works illuminate the relationship between the human body and the natural world while reckoning with climate change realities,” the company said in a statement.
In alignment with the residency’s ethical mission, all performance tickets are offered at pay-what-you-can pricing, with a suggested general admission of $35. Higher-tier patron tickets are available to subsidize accessible options for students, seniors, and fellow artists.
Tickets and registration for the 25th-anniversary season are available through the Time Lapse Dance website.
