Multilingual play to activate Lower East Side and Chinatown gardens this May

Everybody has a story to tell

Remote Theater Project (RTP) has announced the upcoming premiere of “Everyone Has a Story to Tell,” a free interactive community play scheduled to run from May 16 through May 24. Written by Obie Award-winning playwright Carmen Rivera, the original work will be staged across several community gardens in the Lower East Side and Chinatown.

The production was developed through weeks of workshops with local seniors, new migrants, and housing-insecure artists. Directed by RTP founder Alexandra Aron, the multilingual play features a cast of six and seeks to bridge social divides by highlighting lived experiences within the Sara Roosevelt Park area. The project also includes art-making workshops and food justice programming held between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on performance days.

“For three years, we’ve embedded ourselves with Chinese seniors, new migrant families, and unhoused artists in the Sara Roosevelt Park area — listening deeply, hearing stories amid political strife, displacement, and loss,” said Alexandra Aron, artistic director of Remote Theater Project. “We are transforming community gardens into vibrant stages to ensure these voices are heard.”

The performance schedule begins May 16 and 17 at Mfinda Kalunga Garden, followed by a special performance for Chinese seniors at the Open Door Senior Center on May 19. The tour continues May 23 at the 6th and B Garden and concludes May 24 at El Jardin del Paraiso. Funded by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, this production marks the third iteration of RTP’s ongoing community-engaged work in the neighborhood, following previous projects in 2024 and 2025.
