Gingold Theatrical Group is partnering with the American Irish Historical Society to present a special staged reading of George Bernard Shaw’s comedy, John Bull’s Other Island. The reading is scheduled for Monday, August 10, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the society’s building located at 991 Fifth Avenue. Admission is free, though reservations are required, and the organizations suggest a donation for entry.
The reading features a cast of established stage performers, including Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba. She is joined by Rufus Collins, Robert Cuccioli, Rodd Cyrus, George Dvorsky, Jonathan Hadley, Amelia Pedlow, Jamie Sanders, and A.J. Shively. The performance will take place inside the society’s historic Gilded Age mansion, located across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Written in 1904 at the request of W. B. Yeats for the Irish Literary Theatre, John Bull’s Other Island remains the only play Shaw set in Ireland. The comedy explores romance and political insights through high-action humor. Following the performance, the audience is invited to participate in a post-show discussion with the artists and scholars to explore the play’s historical context, Irish identity, and the diaspora.
Now in its 21st year, Gingold Theatrical Group was founded in 2006 by artistic director David Staller. The company uses the humanitarian and activist values in Shaw’s writing to encourage public dialogue and civic engagement. In 2009, the organization became the first company to ever present performances of all 65 of Shaw’s plays.
The American Irish Historical Society has served as a non-partisan, non-sectarian center of Irish American culture and scholarship since its founding in Boston in 1897. Its current Manhattan home houses a private collection of Irish and Irish American literature and history. This upcoming collaborative reading is presented as part of the theatrical group’s ongoing educational and audience enrichment programming.
