The China Arts and Entertainment Group will present the New York premiere of the award-winning dance drama Mulan this September. The production is scheduled for a limited run of four performances from September 18-20, 2026. The staging will take place at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, located at 20 Lincoln Center Plaza in Manhattan.
The upcoming performance schedule includes evening shows on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Additional matinee sessions are scheduled for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices for the production start at $30, with online sales managed through the venue’s dedicated ticketing portal.
Produced and performed by the China Ningbo Performance and Arts Group, the production won the China Dance Lotus Award, which serves as the highest honor in Chinese dance. The narrative centers on the traditional legend of a young Chinese heroine who disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place on the battlefield. Rather than focusing exclusively on heroism, this interpretation explores themes of self-identity, inner growth, and human compassion.
Chief directors and choreographers Zhou Liya and Han Zhen created the production by merging classical Chinese dance, martial arts, and theatrical movement. The creative staging relies on a monumental 15-meter revolving stage that rotates to alter the intensity of battle scenes and frame intimate moments. The visual design is supported by period costumes and atmospheric lighting, while the original score combines traditional Chinese folk instruments with symphonic orchestration.
The cast is headlined by Hao Ruoqi, the principal dancer of the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater, who performs the title role of Mulan. Xia Tian, a principal dancer at the Ningbo Song and Dance Theater, performs alongside her as the male lead, General Wei. The primary creative team includes playwright Zhu Hai, composer Du Ming, set designer Tan Ze’en, lighting designer Han Jiang, costume designer Wang Yukuan, and makeup designer Jia Lei.
