Five-time Golden Globe Award nominee Marilu Henner and Emmy Award nominee Shannon Purser will star in the Off-Broadway commercial premiere of The Ask. Written by Matthew Freeman and directed by Jessi D. Hill, the production plays a limited engagement at Theater 555 in Manhattan.
Preview performances begin Tuesday, October 6, ahead of an official opening night on Tuesday, October 13. The limited run is scheduled to play through Sunday, November 22, at the venue located at 555 West 42nd Street.
The two-person play centers on a donor meeting in an Upper West Side apartment between Greta, a longtime donor with progressive views, and Tanner, a young ACLU fundraiser. As the conversation unfolds, the encounter becomes a battle of wills that explores generational differences and political ideals.
The production marks Purser’s New York stage debut following her screen roles in Stranger Things and Riverdale. Henner’s extensive career includes starring roles in television series such as Taxi and Evening Shade, along with numerous Broadway appearances.
The creative team features set design by Craig Napoliello, costume design by Nicole Wee, lighting design by Venus Gulbranson, and sound design by Ben Scheff. The play previously ran at The Wild Project in New York City under Hill’s direction.
