The Drama Desk-nominated physical theater company Parallel Exit will bring its acclaimed “Sunset Circus” back to the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan for a special engagement on Sunday, May 3.
The performance, scheduled for 11 a.m., features a cast of seven circus professionals with credits including Cirque du Soleil and the Big Apple Circus. Organizers announced that this year’s production will include new, never-before-seen juggling and aerial routines.
Written by Joel Jeske and directed by Mark Lonergan, “Sunset Circus” is designed as an all-ages theatrical experience that weaves innovative circus skills with relatable, character-driven storytelling. The cast includes aerialists, acrobats, and comedians, performing to an original score by composer Peter Bufano.
“Sunset Circus is a family you’ve just met but you’ve known forever,” the company said in a statement. “It features characters who would be at home in your own backyard, entertaining everyone from kids to parents and grandparents.”
Jeske, the show’s creator and a three-time Drama Desk nominee, has a long history in the circus world, having created acts for Ringling Bros. and serving as a physical comedy consultant for Broadway’s “SpongeBob SquarePants.” Lonergan, Artistic Director of Parallel Exit, previously served as guest director for three seasons of the Big Apple Circus.
Tickets are priced at $50 for orchestra seating and $40 for the balcony. As an added feature, all ticket purchases include digital access to special circus-themed coloring book pages.
