Petivity, a pet technology brand powered by Purina, has introduced the Smart Feeder for Cats. The device uses artificial intelligence and built-in camera technology to recognize individual cats and track their daily eating habits.
The feeder is designed to assist pet owners with proactive health monitoring, specifically in multi-cat households with up to five cats. Built-in sensors measure portion sizes, eating frequency, and overall consumption patterns to help detect subtle changes in behavior over time.
Purina data scientists developed the system using a dataset built from more than 21,000 feeding sessions and video footage of over 15,000 cats. The feeder pairs with a companion mobile application that allows users to manage custom feeding schedules, receive low-kibble alerts, and view live video.
Kristin Slater, product development lead at Petivity, noted that tracking feeding frequency and portion sizes provides essential health insights, as overfeeding remains a common issue for cat owners. Dr. Natalie Langenfeld-McCoy, Purina data scientist, added that extensive testing helped ensure the system accurately identifies individual cats during feeding sessions.
To mark the product launch, Petivity is hosting an interactive public event in Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal on Tuesday, October 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Attendees who press a button at the event will remotely trigger a Smart Feeder located at a partner animal shelter, dispensing a live meal to an adoptable cat on a display screen.
